News August 25, 2008: Screams; Perhaps Of Laughter, Perhaps NotIf there's one thing I enjoy doing, it's terrifying small children. In fact, it's kept me out of all the really good parties. So I can appreciate a book like Where the Deep Ones Are, a tome most blasphemous from the off-kilter minds of Kenneth Hite and Andy Hopp. The book's cute and approachable exterior belies a retelling of that Lovecraftian classic The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Okay, okay, so maybe it isn't exactly a kid's book. But it looks like one and reads like one, which if nothing else makes it an interesting take on a genre typically more tenebrous. Those of us above the milk-and-cookies waterline can certainly enjoy it. Unless you find yourself possessed of some mutant strain of dignity that keeps you from enjoying Very Silly Things. In which case you may not enjoy the book. But then, I'm guessing the chances on that are pretty low. You are, after all, spending time here of all places. -- Fox
